I Placed My Hand on The Bark of an Ancient Mother
2026
Finland is known as the land of forests and thousands of lakes – and rightly so, as it is the most forested country in Europe. These forests cover over seventy-five percent of the country’s land area, but on the flip side, around ninety-five percent of them are used for forestry. However, there was once a different kind of closeness, a quieter understanding between humans and more-than-human worlds. Now this connection lingers as a story that we continue to sell beyond Finland’s borders about never-ending primary forests, rich species populations and people living in harmony with the surrounding nature.

In 'I Placed My Hand on The Bark of an Ancient Mother', I grieve the relationship that once was inherent and circle back to the contemporary decision-making that shapes what remains. Moving between observation and reflection, I wonder what is remembered and what is being erased. Using photography as both a critical and reflective tool, I question dominant narratives about harmony between humans and the environment. By scouting both what is visible and what is hidden, the project holds a more layered understanding of landscape and local relationship to it.

The Lines of Nescience
2024
Are we prisoners of the limitations we ourselves have created? It’s interesting to note how humans today are more intrigued about life outside the cities; but not surprising. As a modern society, we have lost our connection to the natural world and become truly dependent on all things unnatural. We can easily notice the negative effects on our general well-being, yet still ignore the warning signs our deteriorating minds transmit. This man made environment separates us from the things that makes us feel better and increasingly challenges the connection with the more-than-human world.

Beneath The Leafless Trees

“I wish they were tears of happiness, but I know the truth. You offered us life, which we have accepted without giving anything in return. We just keep taking, until there nothing left to take. The colours we see, the scents we smell and the sounds that calms us down. It will soon be just a distant memory. A memory, we will cherish when there are no more days, hours or seconds left.”
